Last weekend at Train and Learn in Atlanta, one of my favorite moments had absolutely nothing to do with shooting drills, gear setups, or range time.
It was sitting in a room full of women instructors, content creators, competitors, beginners, wives, moms, girly girls, tactical girls, funny girls, quiet girls, loud girls…all completely different from each other.
And honestly? It was refreshing.
Because one conversation kept coming up over and over again.
A lot of women feel pressure to show up a certain way online if they want to be accepted in the firearms industry.
And whew…men on social media do NOT help sometimes 😭
Apparently if you’re too feminine, somebody has something to say.
Too glam? Problem.
Too funny? Problem.
Too soft spoken? Problem.
Too confident? Also somehow a problem.
Meanwhile men can post the exact same range photo 47 times and nobody blinks.
It gets exhausting.
And I think a lot of women quietly start feeling like they need to change themselves to “fit” into the 2A space instead of realizing the space actually needs MORE women willing to show up authentically.
The Gun World Needs More Than One Type Of Woman
One thing I loved about Train and Learn was seeing how different everybody was.
Some women were fully tactical.
Some were soft and feminine.
Some were hilarious.
Some were super serious instructors.
Some loved competition shooting.
Some focused on self defense training.
Some were content creators.
Some were beginners still learning.
And all of them belonged there.
That matters because women in the firearms industry are still heavily underrepresented in a lot of ways. When newer women enter this space and only see ONE type of personality or ONE type of image being accepted online, it can make them feel like they have to become somebody else before they start training.
That mindset keeps women out of rooms they absolutely belong in.
At Tribe Defense Academy, one of the biggest things we try to create is an environment where women can walk in exactly as they are.
Nervous.
Funny.
Quiet.
Loud.
Anxious.
Confident.
Girly.
Tactical.
Whatever.
Because beginner gun training should feel welcoming…not like a weird social test.
…Confidence Does Not Replace Training
One thing Tony talks about all the time is how dangerous false confidence can be.
Owning a firearm does not automatically make somebody prepared.
And honestly, social media has made this worse.
A lot of people focus more on looking tactical than actually building skill.
We see it constantly during concealed carry training and firearms training classes. People buy the gear. Buy the gun. Buy the holster. Post the picture.
But they struggle with:
- Drawing safely
- Trigger discipline
- Situational awareness
- Proper grip
- Movement under stress
- Real decision-making
And women especially sometimes feel pressure to “prove” themselves in the room instead of simply focusing on learning.
That pressure is unnecessary.
Good instructors care about safety, consistency, mindset, and willingness to learn. Not whether somebody looks like an action movie character on Instagram.
Real confidence comes through repetition and training.
That’s why personal protection training matters so much.
You Do Not Have To Lose Your Femininity To Learn Self Defense
This part right here is important.
Somewhere along the way, a lot of women started feeling like being feminine and being capable could not exist together.
That’s nonsense.
You can love lashes, heels, pink range bags, soft girl energy, and STILL take your self defense training seriously.
You can be funny and still be responsible.
You can be quiet and still be capable.
You can be nervous and still become skilled.
And honestly? More women need to SEE that.
Representation matters more than people realize.
Sometimes a woman signs up for beginner gun training simply because she saw another relatable woman doing it first.
That is powerful.
Not everybody connects with the ultra-tactical personality online. Some women need to see someone that reminds them of themselves before they finally feel comfortable enough to try.
That’s exactly why we need more diversity in this space.
Social Media Will Always Have Something To Say…Do It Anyway
Let’s be real for a second.
If you’re a woman online in the firearms industry, somebody somewhere is ALWAYS going to have an opinion.
Too much makeup.
Not enough makeup.
Too tactical.
Not tactical enough.
Too sexy.
Too serious.
Too loud.
Too soft.
Men…sigh 😭
And honestly? If you spend your entire journey trying to avoid criticism online, you’ll never show up fully as yourself.
The better question is:
Who are you helping by being authentic?
Because trust me…somebody is watching your content quietly thinking:
“Okay maybe I CAN do this too.”
That matters.
The gun world grows stronger when more women feel welcomed into training spaces instead of judged the second they walk in.
What Actually Builds Confidence
Confidence does not come from pretending.
Confidence comes from competence.
That means:
- Taking firearms training classes
- Practicing consistently
- Learning situational awareness
- Asking questions
- Getting range experience
- Understanding responsibility
- Building real-world skill
And honestly? Most confident women in this space started exactly where everybody else did…nervous.
The difference is they showed up anyway.
That’s why we always tell people at Tribe…you do not need to feel “ready enough” before you train.
Training is HOW you become more confident.
Why Tribe Feels Different For Women
One thing we hear constantly from women after class is:
“I thought this was going to feel intimidating.”
And then by the end of class they’re laughing, asking questions, making friends, and already signing up for more training.
That’s because environment matters.
Women learn better when they feel safe enough to ask questions without judgment.
And honestly? Some people have avoided firearms training classes for YEARS because they were scared of being embarrassed.
That should never happen.
At Tribe Defense Academy, we care about building capable, confident people…not making somebody feel stupid for being new.
Everybody starts somewhere.
The 2A Space Needs YOU…Not A Copy Of Somebody Else
The gun community does not need more copies.
It needs more women willing to show up authentically.
The moms.
The wives.
The introverts.
The glam girls.
The beginners.
The funny girls.
The professionals.
The women still figuring it out.
All of you belong here.
And honestly? The more women who show up confidently as themselves, the more welcoming this entire space becomes for the next woman watching from the sidelines wondering if she belongs too.
Because she does.
