Owning a firearm doesn’t mean every problem should be solved with a firearm.
That may sound obvious, but it’s something many new gun owners never stop to think about.
We spend a lot of time helping students become confident with their firearms. We teach safety, marksmanship, legal responsibilities, and defensive decision-making. But one of the biggest mindset shifts we try to make at Tribe Defense Academy is this:
Your goal is not to win a fight.
Your goal is to get home safely while making the best legal and moral decision possible.
Sometimes that means drawing your firearm.
Many times, it doesn’t.
That’s exactly why every responsible gun owner should also have a less-lethal option available.
Why This Matters
Life isn’t divided into “safe” and “deadly.”
There are countless situations that fall somewhere in between.
Maybe someone is acting aggressively but hasn’t presented a deadly threat.
Maybe a loose dog charges toward your family.
Maybe someone is following you through a parking lot.
Maybe an angry customer gets in your face.
Maybe someone refuses to leave your property but hasn’t escalated to deadly force.
These situations are stressful. They happen quickly. And if your only tool is a firearm, you may feel like you have no good options.
That’s a dangerous place to be.
Responsible protectors understand that having more tools usually leads to better decisions.
Less-lethal options help fill the gap between harsh words and deadly force.
Tony’s Thoughts
One of the biggest mistakes I see is people believing that carrying a firearm automatically prepares them for every situation.
It doesn’t.
Your firearm is designed to stop a deadly threat.
If deadly force is not legally justified, your firearm shouldn’t be your first answer.
Good judgment matters just as much as good shooting.
Responsible concealed carriers constantly evaluate what’s happening around them. They ask themselves:
“What level of force is actually appropriate?”
Sometimes the smartest decision is simply walking away.
Sometimes it’s creating distance.
Sometimes it’s calling 911.
Sometimes it’s using verbal commands.
And sometimes a properly trained less-lethal tool gives you the ability to protect yourself without escalating to deadly force.
The more options you have, the more likely you’ll make a decision you’ll never regret.
Practical Breakdown
Having a less-lethal option does not replace your firearm.
It complements it.
Think of personal protection like layers.
Your first layer is awareness.
Notice what’s happening before it becomes a problem.
Your second layer is avoidance.
Cross the street. Leave the area. Lock the doors. Don’t let your ego keep you in a bad situation.
Your third layer is communication.
Clear, confident verbal commands can stop many situations before they become physical.
Your fourth layer may be a less-lethal option.
Tools like the Byrna launcher or pepper spray may provide an opportunity to stop a threat, create distance, and safely escape without resorting to deadly force.
Only when a situation meets the legal standard for deadly force should your firearm become part of that equation.
That’s why responsible self-defense isn’t about carrying more gear.
It’s about having the right mindset.
Real World Application
Imagine you’re walking to your vehicle after dinner.
A stranger begins following you.
They’re yelling.
They’re closing distance.
They haven’t displayed a weapon.
They haven’t physically attacked you.
Are you justified in drawing a firearm?
Maybe.
Maybe not.
Every situation is different, and the law depends on the specific facts.
Now imagine you have another option.
You continue creating distance.
You issue verbal commands.
You prepare a less-lethal tool while moving toward safety.
You call 911.
You still have your firearm if the situation escalates to a deadly threat, but now you have additional choices that may prevent the situation from reaching that point.
That’s what responsible preparation looks like.
Shani’s Perspective
Can I be honest?
Most people don’t spend enough time thinking about the “gray area.”
Everyone imagines the movie scene where the bad guy has a weapon and the decision is obvious.
Real life usually isn’t that clean.
Sometimes it’s the aggressive person in the grocery store parking lot.
Sometimes it’s someone acting strangely during a road rage incident.
Sometimes it’s the loose dog running toward you while you’re walking your neighborhood.
You don’t get to pause life and Google what to do.
That’s why I love teaching less-lethal classes.
Students leave realizing they have another option besides feeling helpless or feeling like they have to jump straight to a firearm.
Confidence isn’t about carrying the biggest tool.
Confidence comes from knowing which tool is appropriate for the situation in front of you.
Why Training Changes Everything
Buying equipment is easy.
Knowing when to use it is the hard part.
Training builds judgment.
Training builds confidence.
Training removes panic.
Training helps you understand legal considerations before you’re forced to make a split-second decision.
At Tribe Defense Academy, we don’t just teach people how to shoot.
We teach people how to think.
That’s what separates responsible gun owners from people who simply own guns.
The goal is always to avoid violence whenever possible.
When violence cannot be avoided, we want our students to have the skills, confidence, and decision-making ability to respond appropriately.
Whether that’s walking away…
Using verbal commands…
Deploying a less-lethal option…
Or, if absolutely necessary, defending yourself with deadly force.
Preparation means having options.
