MD HQL (Handgun Qualification License) Course

For new handgun owners in the State of Maryland, this is where your journey begins. We offer a state-approved firearms safety training course specially crafted to fulfill the requirements of the Handgun Qualification License (HQL).​

The HQL course will cover the following topics:

✅ The Big 4 Safety Rules
Learn the most important rules every gun owner must know to keep yourself and others safe—whether you’re at home or at the range.

✅ How to Safely Store and Handle a Firearm
We’ll show you how to carry, store, and pass a gun without putting anyone in danger (yes, even when it’s not loaded).

✅ Getting to Know Handguns
You’ll learn the names and functions of the main parts of a handgun. No more pretending to know what “slide” or “magazine” means—we got you!

✅ What Happens When You Pull the Trigger (Ballistics)
We’ll explain what actually happens when you fire a shot—and you’ll get hands-on experience that makes it make sense.

✅ Live Practice and Skill Drills
You’ll get to try it for yourself in a safe, supportive environment. Practice makes confident shooters!

✅ How to Shoot the Right Way
Stance, grip, sight picture, breathing, trigger control—we’ll help you build a strong foundation from the start.

✅ Understanding Maryland’s Gun Laws
We’ll break down the laws you need to know—without the legal jargon—so you know your rights and stay within the rules.

Training is valid for 3 years and must be completed prior to submitting an application for a Handgun Qualification License.

Who Needs It: If you want to buy, rent, or receive a handgun in Maryland, and it’s after October 1, 2013, the law says you must have a valid Handgun Qualification License (HQL) from the Maryland State Police. No HQL, no handgun—it’s that simple.

Cost: $125 per person

Duration: 4 hours

Location: Classroom in Suitland, MD, followed by range qualifier at Small Arms Range Upper Marlboro, MD
